Preserved Tomato Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023

In July 2023, the average preserved tomato import price amounted to $1,258 per ton, waning by -3.4% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 11% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,302 per ton in June 2023, and then reduced slightly in the following month.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Italy.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Spain amounted to +7.6% per month.

Preserved Tomato Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average preserved tomato export price stood at $1,637 per ton in 2022, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Namibia ($1,851 per ton) and Botswana ($1,747 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($1,268 per ton) and Zimbabwe ($1,320 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Preserved Tomato Imports in South Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of preserved tomatoes decreased by -3.9% to 11K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 12K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports shrank slightly to $11M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $11M, and then fell in the following year.
