Potato Price in Switzerland (CIF) - 2023
The average potato import price stood at $600 per ton in August 2023, falling by -21.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 26% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $884 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($961 per ton), while the price for Germany ($555 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average potato export price stood at $533 per ton in August 2023, shrinking by -29.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced increase from September 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% over the last eleven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, potato export price decreased by -29.2% against July 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 37% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $754 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($693 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($341 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Imports in Switzerland
For the fourth year in a row, Switzerland recorded growth in supplies from abroad of potatoes, which increased by 88% to 93K tons in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas shipments of potatoes increased by 18% to 8.1K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction.
