Peat Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2022

The average peat import price stood at $276 per ton in 2022, increasing by 40% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, peat import price increased by +85.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were India ($317 per ton) and Sri Lanka ($313 per ton), while the price for Finland ($229 per ton) and the Netherlands ($260 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Peat Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average peat export price amounted to $245 per ton, dropping by -33.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 87%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $606 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($760 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($115 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Peat Imports in Malaysia

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of peat decreased by -47.6% to 16K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 30K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, peat imports declined rapidly to $4.4M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $6M, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Peat Exports in Malaysia

In 2022, shipments abroad of peat decreased by -7.1% to 160 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 52%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 250 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, peat exports dropped sharply to $39K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $68K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
