Peat Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average peat import price amounted to $276 per ton, dropping by -6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12%. The import price peaked at $472 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($939 per ton), while the price for Latvia ($339 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Peat Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022

The average peat export price stood at $1,190 per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 82%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,432 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for El Salvador.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for El Salvador amounted to +18.3% per year.

Peat Imports in Costa Rica

In 2022, approx. 3.3K tons of peat were imported into Costa Rica; picking up by 25% on 2021. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 203% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, peat imports surged to $914K in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
