Peat Price in Canada (FOB) - 2023

The average peat export price stood at $414 per ton in September 2023, rising by 3% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 9.5% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $469 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($414 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan totaled $327 per ton.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.1%).

Peat Price in Canada (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average peat import price amounted to $583 per ton, increasing by 114% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 456% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,589 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,014 per ton), while the price for Ireland ($106 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Peat Exports in Canada

In 2022, the amount of peat exported from Canada reached 1.5M tons, flattening at 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, peat exports rose notably to $524M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Peat Imports in Canada

Peat imports into Canada expanded rapidly to 23K tons in 2022, with an increase of 7.7% against 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a deep slump.

In value terms, peat imports surged to $21M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
