Packaging Materials Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average packaging materials import price amounted to $909 per ton, shrinking by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,046 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($2,789 per ton), while the price for Australia ($639 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Materials Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average packaging materials export price amounted to $823 per ton, growing by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($1,087 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($715 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Materials Imports in New Zealand

In 2022, purchases abroad of packaging materials decreased by -3.5% to 249K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 0.4%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 258K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, packaging materials imports declined to $226M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $259M, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, packaging materials exports totaled $227M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
