Molasse Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
The average molasse export price stood at $186 per ton in 2022, increasing by 33% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, molasse export price increased by +79.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $211 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($496 per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($140 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+26.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In September 2023, the average molasse import price amounted to $96.1 per ton, rising by 4.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 46% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $148 per ton. From May 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($110 per ton), while the price for Zambia totaled $79.0 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+0.9%).
Molasse Exports in South Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of molasses decreased by -70% to 7.3K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 213% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 41K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molasse exports shrank markedly to $1.4M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 54%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $4.3M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
