In December 2021, the average modified starches import price amounted to $956 per ton, reducing by -2.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2021 when the average import price increased by 20% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,196 per ton. From July 2021 to December 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,800 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($829 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Modified Starches Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022

The average modified starches export price stood at $1,229 per ton in 2022, reducing by -8.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 28%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,341 per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($2,294 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sri Lanka ($642 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Modified Starches Imports in Malaysia

In 2022, the amount of dextrins and other modified starches imported into Malaysia dropped to 46K tons, with a decrease of -5.4% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 49K tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, modified starches imports dropped to $45M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $49M, and then dropped in the following year.

Modified Starches Exports in Malaysia

Modified starches exports from Malaysia contracted sharply to 2.8K tons in 2022, declining by -17.3% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 51%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 3.4K tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, modified starches exports shrank remarkably to $3.4M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $4.5M, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
