Melon Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average melon import price amounted to $2,263 per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2023 an increase of 115% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in September 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($5,688 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,134 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+35.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Melon Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average melon export price amounted to $794 per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,059 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,560 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($639 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Melon Imports in the United States

Melon imports into the United States expanded significantly to 553K tons in 2022, growing by 7.4% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline.

In value terms, melon imports rose notably to $302M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn.
