Maize Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average maize import price stood at $349 per ton in July 2023, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $419 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($352 per ton) and South Africa ($334 per ton), while the price for Romania ($320 per ton) and Argentina ($322 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Maize Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
The average maize export price stood at $498 per ton in 2022, rising by 42% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 407% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $15,162 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($4,123 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($293 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Maize Imports in Japan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of maize was finally on the rise to reach 15M tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump.
In value terms, maize imports skyrocketed to $5.8B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 44%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Maize Exports in Japan
In 2022, overseas shipments of maize decreased by -65% to 77 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,673% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 220 tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, maize exports declined markedly to $38K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 528% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $77K, and then fell sharply in the following year.
