Lentil Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

The average lentil import price stood at $1,263 per ton in July 2023, shrinking by -9.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 25% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,741 per ton. From March 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Myanmar ($1,410 per ton) and India ($1,296 per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($1,025 per ton) and Australia ($1,054 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Lentil Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average lentil export price amounted to $2,293 per ton, shrinking by -11.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 154%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,957 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Solomon Islands ($5,525 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($1,602 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Solomon Islands (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lentil Imports in New Zealand

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lentils decreased by -12.1% to 1.8K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lentil imports dropped modestly to $2.4M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.6M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
