Lactose Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

The average lactose export price stood at $876 per ton in September 2023, dropping by -7.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 4% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,387 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($1,488 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($635 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Lactose Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average lactose import price amounted to $5,023 per ton, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($11,714 per ton), while the price for China ($1,373 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lactose Exports in the United States

In 2022, approx. 453K tons of lactose and lactose syrup were exported from the United States; growing by 16% on the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lactose exports skyrocketed to $583M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
