For the sixth consecutive year, the global market recorded growth in overseas shipments of lactose and lactose syrup, which increased by 5.5% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 8.5%. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, lactose exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +98.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) were the largest exporters of lactose and lactose syrup, together creating 80% of total exports. New Zealand (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +49.9%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of global exports. These countries were followed by New Zealand, France, Poland and Italy, which together accounted for a further 12%.
Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +49.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average lactose export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable slump. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.0%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Lactose Imports
Imports
After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -1.7% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, lactose imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 32%. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of lactose and lactose syrup, namely China, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Japan, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, France, Vietnam and Belgium, represented more than half of total import. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and New Zealand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 26% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Japan, India, Ireland, Germany, Indonesia, France, Mexico, Belgium, Thailand and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Among the main importing countries, Germany, with a CAGR of +7.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average lactose import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (-0.4%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
