Lactose Price in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average lactose export price amounted to $2,380 per ton, surging by 4.1% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 12% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,514 per ton. From May 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($4,986 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($1,098 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2023
The average lactose import price stood at $1,258 per ton in August 2023, growing by 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $1,507 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($4,931 per ton), while the price for France ($887 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Exports in the Netherlands
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of lactose and lactose syrup, when their volume decreased by -27.6% to 132K tons. Overall, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 51% against the previous year.
In value terms, lactose exports fell markedly to $250M in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $402M, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Lactose Imports in the Netherlands
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -4.6% to 110K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 115K tons, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, lactose imports reduced slightly to $147M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $148M, leveling off in the following year.
