Lactose Price in Thailand (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average lactose import price amounted to $1,487 per ton, falling by -6.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 38% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,105 per ton. From December 2022 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($3,289 per ton), while the price for Israel ($952 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Price in Thailand (FOB) - 2023
The average lactose export price stood at $3,711 per ton in September 2023, shrinking by -34.2% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 when the average export price increased by 143% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $5,646 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($7,199 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($841 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Imports in Thailand
For the fourth year in a row, Thailand recorded growth in overseas purchases of lactose and lactose syrup, which increased by 0.4% to 26K tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lactose imports expanded significantly to $41M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +23.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +87.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
