Lactose Price in Nigeria (CIF) - 2022

The average lactose import price stood at $1,358 per ton in 2022, increasing by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,794 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($2,011 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($594 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lactose Price in Nigeria (FOB) - 2022

The average lactose export price stood at $4,182 per ton in 2022, growing by 6.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($4,444 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($563 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana (+82.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lactose Imports in Nigeria

In 2022, overseas purchases of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -66.8% to 1.9K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a significant contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 14K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lactose imports shrank dramatically to $2.5M in 2022. Overall, imports faced a precipitous slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $13M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.7%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lactose exports expanded sharply to $10K in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
