Lactose Price in India (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average lactose import price amounted to $1,908 per ton, stabilizing at the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 22% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,380 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($4,126 per ton), while the price for Poland ($899 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Price in India (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average lactose export price amounted to $1,871 per ton, growing by 37% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 43% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,480 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($3,383 per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($531 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nepal (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Imports in India
In 2022, purchases abroad of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -22.6% to 42K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 61K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lactose imports dropped to $87M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year.
