Lactose Price in France (CIF) - 2023

The average lactose import price stood at $1,727 per ton in August 2023, dropping by -3.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 7.1% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,074 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,700 per ton), while the price for the UK ($821 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Lactose Price in France (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average lactose export price amounted to $1,139 per ton, falling by -11.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 an increase of 6.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,625 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,523 per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($575 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Lactose Imports in France

For the fourth year in a row, France recorded growth in supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup, which increased by 20% to 44K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lactose imports surged to $78M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Lactose Exports in France

In 2022, overseas shipments of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -2.8% to 48K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 55K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lactose exports soared to $67M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
