Lactose Price in Croatia (CIF) - 2023

In July 2023, the average lactose import price amounted to $5,841 per ton, which is down by -3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, lactose import price decreased by -3.7% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 65% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $6,066 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($5,950 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($3,561 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+28.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lactose Price in Croatia (FOB) - 2022

The average lactose export price stood at $3,449 per ton in 2022, rising by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $4,193 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($5,339 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($1,833 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Lactose Imports in Croatia

In 2022, imports of lactose and lactose syrup into Croatia fell modestly to 665 tons, stabilizing at 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year.

In value terms, lactose imports expanded sharply to $3M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 24%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
