Iodine Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average iodine export price amounted to $52,419 per ton, with an increase of 6% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 18% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in July 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($67,030 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($32,339 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Iodine Price in Japan (CIF) - 2022

The average iodine import price stood at $19,238 per ton in 2022, falling by -42.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $65,657 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Taiwan (Chinese).

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +0.7% per year.

Iodine Exports in Japan

In 2022, exports of iodine from Japan amounted to 5.1K tons, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, iodine exports surged to $195M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Iodine Imports in Japan

In 2022, purchases abroad of iodine decreased by -86.8% to 16 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 146%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 237 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iodine imports dropped markedly to $309K in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 198%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7.4M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
