Initially, a nutrient medium known as a substrate is prepared. This substrate typically contains a carbon source such as glucose or molasses, as well as other essential nutrients required for the growth and metabolism of the microorganism. The substrate is sterilized to eliminate any potential contaminants.

Once the substrate is prepared, it is inoculated with the chosen microorganism. The fermentation process then begins, during which the microorganism consumes the carbon source and produces citric acid as a metabolic byproduct. The fermentation tanks are carefully controlled for factors such as temperature, pH level, and oxygen supply to ensure optimal growth and citric acid production.

After the fermentation process is complete, the mixture is usually filtered to remove any solid materials or microbial cells. The resulting liquid, which contains citric acid, undergoes further purification steps such as precipitation, filtration, and concentration to obtain a highly pure form of citric acid.

Once the citric acid is purified, it can be used for various industrial applications. In the food and beverage industry, it is commonly used as a flavor enhancer, preservative, or acidulant. In pharmaceuticals, it is used as an excipient in tablet formulations or as a pH adjuster in liquid medications. Citric acid also has applications in cosmetics, where it is used in skincare products and as a chelating agent to enhance the effectiveness of preservatives. Additionally, it is used in cleaning products for its descaling and cleaning properties.
