U.S. Diesel Engines (Other Than For Motor Vehicles And Aircraft) Import Price in August 2022

In August 2022, the diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) price stood at $4.5K per unit (CIF, US), dropping by -4.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 an increase of 1.5% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $4.8K per unit in May 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($11K per unit), while the price for Thailand ($2K per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) for marine propulsion ($16K per unit), while the price for compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) other than for marine or motor vehicle propulsion totaled $4.4K per unit.

In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 29% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 290M units in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In August 2022, compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) other than for marine or motor vehicle propulsion (55K units) was the main type of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) supplied to the United States, with a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) for marine propulsion (626 units), with a 1.1% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) other than for marine or motor vehicle propulsion was relatively modest.

In value terms, compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) other than for marine or motor vehicle propulsion ($242M) constituted the largest type of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) supplied to the United States, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines (diesel or semi-diesel engines) for marine propulsion ($9.9M), with a 3.9% share of total imports.

In August 2022, Japan (30K units) constituted the largest diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) supplier to the United States, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (7.2K units), fourfold. South Korea (4.8K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.7% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.2% per month) and South Korea (-3.0% per month).

In value terms, Japan ($82M) constituted the largest supplier of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) to the United States, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($35M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Japan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the UK (+4.2% per month) and Italy (+5.8% per month).
