Container Price in Australia (CIF) - 2022
The average container import price stood at $0.2 per unit in 2022, growing by 5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($0.3 per unit) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($0.3 per unit), while the price for the UK ($0.2 per unit) and New Zealand ($0.2 per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Container Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average container export price amounted to $285 per thousand units, picking up by 7.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 7.8% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in July 2023.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to France ($292 per thousand units) and Thailand ($292 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Papua New Guinea ($261 per thousand units) and New Zealand ($276 per thousand units) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Container Imports in Australia
In 2022, the amount of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers imported into Australia reached 544M units, with an increase of 6.6% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, container imports expanded sharply to $134M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 39%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
