Consumption of Sugar Sweetened Beverages

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has become a significant public health concern worldwide. These beverages, also known as SSBs, include carbonated soft drinks, fruit drinks, and sports and energy drinks that contain added sugars. They are a major source of empty calories and have been linked to various negative health outcomes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting the consumption of free sugars, which include those found in SSBs, to less than 10% of total daily energy intake. However, many individuals exceed this limit, leading to increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, dental problems, and even certain cancers.

In recent years, the consumption of SSBs has reached alarming levels, particularly among young people. Many factors contribute to this trend, including aggressive marketing and advertising strategies targeted at children and adolescents. The easy availability, low cost, and addictive nature of these beverages also play a role in their high consumption.

Around the world, higher SSB consumption is associated with higher rates of obesity. This is because these beverages provide a large number of calories without providing the necessary nutrients to support proper health. Regular consumption can lead to weight gain, as the excess calories from SSBs are stored as fat in the body.

Furthermore, SSBs have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Regular intake of sugary drinks can lead to insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin. This impairs the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels and can eventually lead to the development of diabetes.

Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke, are also influenced by the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. High intake of SSBs has been associated with elevated blood pressure, increased triglyceride levels, and higher levels of harmful cholesterol. These factors contribute to the development of cardiovascular problems and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Dental health is another area significantly affected by the consumption of SSBs. The high sugar content and acidity of these beverages contribute to tooth decay and cavities. The harmful effects are particularly pronounced among children and adolescents who consume these beverages on a regular basis.

Efforts to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages have been implemented worldwide. Some countries have introduced taxes on SSBs, while others have restricted their availability in schools and public institutions. Public health campaigns and educational initiatives aim to raise awareness about the health risks associated with these beverages and promote healthier alternatives.

In conclusion, the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages poses a significant global health challenge. Efforts to reduce their intake are crucial in combating obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, dental problems, and other related health issues. Promoting healthier drink choices and implementing policies to discourage excessive consumption are important steps towards improving public health and well-being.

Global Sugar Production to Grow Tangibly This Year, Keeping Prices Stable
Aug 13, 2021
Eye 1331

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
