Common Clay Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average common clay export price amounted to $273 per ton, growing by 5.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 32% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $327 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($813 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($117 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Common Clay Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average common clay import price amounted to $1,062 per ton, growing by 30% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a strong expansion from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +7.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, common clay import price increased by +58.4% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 46% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in September 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1,779 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($429 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Common Clay Exports in the United States
In 2022, approx. 461K tons of common clay were exported from the United States; growing by 16% against 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, common clay exports totaled $129M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
