Common Clay Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average common clay import price stood at $400 per ton in July 2023, growing by 8.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 an increase of 46% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $542 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,046 per ton), while the price for India ($304 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Common Clay Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average common clay export price amounted to $541 per ton, surging by 50% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $954 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($937 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($230 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Common Clay Imports in Japan
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of common clay decreased by -26.1% to 76K tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 102K tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, common clay imports dropped to $29M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $33M, and then shrank in the following year.

Common clay exports from Japan declined markedly to 4.8K tons in 2022, waning by -18.9% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 0.2% against the previous year.
In value terms, common clay exports shrank rapidly to $2.5M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 1%.
