Commercial Printing Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

The average commercial printing import price stood at $12,790 per ton in July 2023, remaining stable against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $17,053 per ton. From April 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($25,721 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($3,713 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average commercial printing export price stood at $12,222 per ton in 2022, growing by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 15%. The export price peaked at $13,473 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($15,043 per ton), while the average price for exports to Papua New Guinea ($9,651 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, approx. 87K tons of commercial printing (except screen and books) were imported into Australia; waning by -5.8% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 92K tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, commercial printing imports stood at $933M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
