In value terms, China ($15M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ireland ($2.1M). It was followed by Germany.

The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 10%. Global production peaked at 14K tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, coarse animal hair production fell slightly to $27M in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $28M in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Kazakhstan (2.9K tons), Turkmenistan (2K tons) and Uzbekistan (1.6K tons), together comprising 47% of global production. Belgium, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Coarse Animal Hair

Global coarse animal hair imports fell markedly to 11K tons in 2022, with a decrease of -24.5% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 14K tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, coarse animal hair imports reduced to $23M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +43.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $27M, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports By Country

China dominates imports structure, amounting to 9.1K tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (702 tons), mixing up a 6.5% share of total imports. The UK (358 tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coarse animal hair imports, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the UK (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Germany (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+40 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-13.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average coarse animal hair import price amounted to $2,167 per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 29%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,718 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,393 per ton), while China ($1,613 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.8%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Coarse Animal Hair

In 2022, overseas shipments of coarse animal hair decreased by -23.1% to 8.6K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +63.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 82%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 11K tons, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, coarse animal hair exports declined sharply to $14M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +42.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $18M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of coarse animal hair, namely Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Belgium and Uzbekistan, represented more than half of total export. Afghanistan (496 tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5.8% share, followed by Pakistan (5.1%). The following exporters - Turkey (357 tons), Iran (335 tons), the UK (226 tons), Germany (219 tons), Tajikistan (164 tons) and Russia (136 tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +59.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($3.5M), Turkmenistan ($2M) and Afghanistan ($1.5M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of global exports. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, the UK, Pakistan, Germany, Iran, Turkey, Tajikistan and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Among the main exporting countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average coarse animal hair export price amounted to $1,617 per ton, growing by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,389 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($2,971 per ton), while Kazakhstan ($561 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
