Clove Price in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022

The average clove export price stood at $8,916 per ton in 2022, increasing by 54% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $11,107 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($13,524 per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($4,015 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Clove Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average clove import price amounted to $6,750 per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $12,044 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($15,000 per ton), while the price for India ($2,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (-5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Clove Exports in Sri Lanka

In 2022, clove exports from Sri Lanka dropped significantly to 2.4K tons, falling by -62.8% against the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 6.4K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, clove exports reduced dramatically to $21M in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 119% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $37M, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Clove Imports in Sri Lanka

For the third year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded decline in overseas purchases of cloves, which decreased by 99.9% to 4 kg in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp contraction. The smallest decline of -41.7% was in 2020.

In value terms, clove imports shrank sharply to $27 in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a dramatic curtailment. The smallest decline of -42.5% was in 2020.
