In July 2023, the average chocolate and confectionery import price amounted to $6,441 per ton, picking up by 1.9% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 18% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $6,607 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($9,328 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($4,620 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average chocolate and confectionery export price stood at $6,553 per ton in July 2023, growing by 2.5% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 8.6% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $6,601 per ton in April 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to July 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($10,042 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($5,480 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate and Confectionery Imports in Finland

In 2022, the amount of chocolate and confectionery imported into Finland expanded notably to 39K tons, surging by 13% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports expanded slightly to $218M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Chocolate and Confectionery Exports in Finland

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of chocolate and confectionery decreased by -2% to 16K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 16K tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.
