Chlorine Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

The average chlorine import price stood at $1,022 per ton in September 2023, surging by 3.4% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 95% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,833 per ton. From January 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($1,026 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($716 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Chlorine Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

The average chlorine export price stood at $2,224 per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 20%. The export price peaked at $3,665 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Samoa ($8,929 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cook Islands ($1,930 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+403.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chlorine Imports in New Zealand

For the fourth consecutive year, New Zealand recorded growth in supplies from abroad of chlorine, which increased by 41% to 2.4K tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 136%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, chlorine imports surged to $2.8M in 2022. Overall, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Chlorine Exports in New Zealand

In 2022, shipments abroad of chlorine decreased by -15% to 114 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 89%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 134 tons, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, chlorine exports dropped modestly to $253K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 86%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $262K, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
