The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.5M tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (27K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +111.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China was the key exporting country with an export of around 587K tons, which recorded 42% of total exports. India (150K tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (77K tons) and Poland (65K tons). All these countries together held near 21% share of total exports. France (49K tons), Germany (46K tons), Iran (45K tons), Qatar (41K tons), Saudi Arabia (34K tons), Thailand (31K tons), Bangladesh (28K tons), the United Arab Emirates (25K tons) and Kuwait (24K tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Qatar (+422.2%), Bangladesh (+74.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+20.8%), Iran (+10.0%), India (+8.3%), Germany (+4.7%) and Kuwait (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +422.2% from 2012-2022. Poland, Thailand and Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-4.7%) and France (-37.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+5.6 p.p.), China (+4.6 p.p.), France (+3.5 p.p.), Qatar (+3 p.p.), Bangladesh (+2 p.p.), Iran (+1.9 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -1.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($391M) remains the largest caustic soda in the solid form supplier worldwide, comprising 33% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($109M), with a 9.2% share of global exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+10.8% per year) and Russia (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices By Country
