Bovine Animals; Live Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average bovine animals; live export price amounted to $1,100 per unit, falling by -1.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 8.8% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,272 per unit in June 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Israel ($1,180 per unit), while the average price for exports to Spain amounted to $796 per unit.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+0.7%).

The average bovine animals; live import price stood at $1,174 per unit in August 2023, dropping by -33.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, posted a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 134% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,648 per unit; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Spain.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Ireland amounted to +2.0% per month.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, bovine animals; live exports soared to $179M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +85.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
