Which Country Exports the Most Glass Containers in the World?

Global glass container exports totaled 13M tonnes in 2016, surging by 5% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 12% year-to-year. Global glass container export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, glass container exports totaled $9.3B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global glass container export peaked of $9.9B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Glass Container Exports By Country

In 2016, China (1.7M tonnes), Germany (1.4M tonnes), and Portugal (1M tonnes) represented the major exporters of glass container in the world, generating 33% of total export. It was distantly followed by Spain (649K tonnes), creating 5% share of total glass container exports. France (563K tonnes), Mexico (512K tonnes), Russia (496K tonnes), the U.S. (448K tonnes), Italy (436K tonnes), Poland (378K tonnes), the Netherlands (345K tonnes), and Czech Republic (314K tonnes) took the minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of glass container exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Spain (+16.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($1.5B), Germany ($1.1B) and Italy ($733M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 36% of global exports.

China (+14.3% per year) had the highest growth rate of glass container exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Glass Container Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for glass container amounted to $732 per tonne, dropping by -3.0% against the previous year. Overall, glass container export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 16% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average glass container export price reached its maximum level of $835 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($1,681 per tonne), while Russia ($296 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of glass container export prices was attained by France (+8.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
