There has been a significant rise in the use and production of biofuels in recent times. Biofuels are an alternative to traditional fossil fuels, which emit harmful greenhouse gases and contribute to climate change. Biofuels are produced from plants, which absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, making them a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative.
One of the primary sources of biofuels is oilseed crops. Oilseed crops, as the name suggests, are grown for the oil they produce, which can be used to create biodiesel. There are several types of oilseed crops that can be used to produce biofuels, including rapeseed, soybean, sunflower, palm, and jatropha seed, among others.
Rapeseed is one of the most widely used oilseed crops and is commonly grown in Europe. The seeds of the rapeseed plant contain a large quantity of oil, ranging from 35% to 46%. The oil from the rapeseed plant is used to produce biodiesel, which can be blended with traditional diesel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Soybean is another popular choice for biofuel production. Soybean seeds contain approximately 20% oil and are grown mainly in North and South America.
Sunflower seeds are another biofuel crop that is commonly grown in Europe. The oil content of sunflower seeds is relatively low, at around 20%, but the crop is easy to grow and requires less water and fewer pesticides. Palm oil is also a popular source of biofuel. Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree and is mainly grown in Southeast Asia. However, its production has been criticized for causing environmental damage through deforestation and other harmful practices.
Jatropha is a relatively new crop that has gained popularity as a biofuel source. Jatropha seeds contain up to 40% oil and the crop is drought-resistant, making it ideal for cultivation in arid environments. Jatropha is grown mainly in Asia and Africa.
The production of biofuels from oilseed crops has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, biofuels are more sustainable and environmentally friendly compared to traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, the cultivation of oilseed crops can stimulate rural economies and provide new sources of income for farmers.
On the other hand, the production of biofuels from oilseed crops can also have negative impacts on the environment. The intensive cultivation of oilseed crops can lead to deforestation and biodiversity loss, and the use of pesticides and fertilizers can cause soil degradation and water pollution.
In conclusion, biofuel seeds are an important source of alternative energy. Oilseed crops like rapeseed, soybean, sunflower, palm, and jatropha can be used to produce biodiesel, which is a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels. However, the production of biofuels from oilseed crops must be managed sustainably to ensure that the benefits outweigh the negative impacts on the environment.

This year, Belgium is overtaking Germany to emerge as the second-largest biodiesel exporter in the world. From January to July 2021, Belgium supplied biodiesel worth $2.1B abroad, while Germany’s exports were estimated at $1.8B. The Netherlands keeps the leading position with a biodiesel export value of $4.2B. In 2020, Germany ($2.3B) followed the Netherlands ($4.6B) in global export ranking, while Belgium ($1.5B) took third place. The average biodiesel export price grew by +11% y-o-y to $979 per ton in 2020.
Neither the pandemic nor the low oil prices succeeded in slowing the growth of the global biodiesel market. As economies worldwide start to recover from the Covid crisis, and environmental concerns increase, the demand is set to remain robust in 2021.
