In 2022, the average biodiesel import price amounted to $2,206 per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 59%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,685 per ton), while the price for Sweden ($1,326 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Biodiesel Price in Norway (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average biodiesel export price amounted to $1,275 per ton, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 24% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,415 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($1,284 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden stood at $1,263 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (-3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Biodiesel Imports in Norway
Biodiesel imports into Norway amounted to 271K tons in 2022, with an increase of 11% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year.
In value terms, biodiesel imports surged to $599M in 2022. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Biodiesel Exports in Norway
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of biodiesel decreased by -1.5% to 64K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 8.7%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 65K tons, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
In value terms, biodiesel exports rose markedly to $122M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
