Beer Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average beer import price amounted to $1.4 per litre, rising by 3.8% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 an increase of 11% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in September 2023.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were the Netherlands ($1.8 per litre) and Vietnam ($1.4 per litre), while the price for China ($1.4 per litre) and Mexico ($1.4 per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Beer Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average beer export price amounted to $1.2 per litre, approximately reflecting the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1.2 per litre, leveling off in the following month.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Australia ($1.2 per litre) and Tonga ($1.2 per litre), while the average price for exports to China ($1.2 per litre) and Cook Islands ($1.2 per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Beer Imports in New Zealand

In 2022, beer imports into New Zealand expanded remarkably to 64M litres, increasing by 6.2% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. Imports peaked at 72M litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer imports surged to $78M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Beer Exports in New Zealand

For the third year in a row, New Zealand recorded decline in shipments abroad of beer, which decreased by -18.2% to 22M litres in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The smallest decline of -3.5% was in 2020. The exports peaked at 29M litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports declined to $22M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The smallest decline of -4% was in 2021. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $29M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
