Which Country Exports the Most Wheelchairs in the World?

Global wheelchair exports totaled 61K tonnes in 2016, picking up by 6% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, wheelchair exports increased by +14.8% against its level of 2011. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when exports increased by 61% against the previous year level. Global wheelchair export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheelchair exports stood at $1.2B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, global wheelchair exports reached its maximum level of $1.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Wheelchair Exports By Country

In 2016, China (28K tonnes) was the main exporter for wheelchair, achieving 45% of total exports. Germany (5.8K tonnes) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by the U.S. (3.5K tonnes), and the Netherlands (3.1K tonnes). All these countries together held near 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Sweden (2.5K tonnes), Poland (2.3K tonnes), Mexico (2.2K tonnes), France (1.7K tonnes), Canada (1.3K tonnes), Viet Nam (1.3K tonnes), Belgium (1.1K tonnes), and the UK (1.1K tonnes) together made up 22% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Viet Nam (+34.6%), Canada (+14.0%), the Netherlands (+13.6%), France (+9.8%), Belgium (+8.6%), the U.S. (+6.7%), Mexico (+5.8%), Poland (+4.3%), and Germany (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Viet Nam emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2007-2016. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Canada, France, Viet Nam, the U.S., the Netherlands, and China decreased by -1.5%, -1.6%, -1.9%, -2.6%, -3.5%, and -29.3% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($539M) remains the largest wheelchair supplier in the world, making up 44% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($141M), with the share of 11% of global exports. It was followed by the U.S., with the share of 6%.

In China, wheelchair exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Germany (+0.6% per year) and the U.S. (+1.2% per year).

Wheelchair Export Prices By Country

The average wheelchair export price stood at $20 per kg in 2016, dropping by -6.7% against the previous year. Overall, wheelchair export price continues to indicate a moderate reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009, when export price increased by 36% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average wheelchair export price attained its maximum level of $25 per kg in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Viet Nam ($29 per kg), while Poland ($12 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of wheelchair export prices was attained by the UK (+0.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
