Which Country Exports the Most Waterproof Footwear in the World?

Global waterproof footwear exports totaled 216K tonnes in 2016, declining by -4.4% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a moderate increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, waterproof footwear exports decreased by -11.2% against its level of 2014. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 33% y-o-y. Global waterproof footwear export peaked of 243K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, waterproof footwear exports stood at $1.4B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, waterproof footwear exports decreased by -20.1% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global waterproof footwear exports attained its maximum level of $1.7B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Waterproof Footwear Exports By Country

China (106K tonnes) represented the largest exporting country with an export of around 106K tonnes, which finished at 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (15K tonnes), and China, Hong Kong SAR (9.9K tonnes), together comprising 12% share of total waterproof footwear exports. Portugal (8.6K tonnes), Bosnia and Herzegovina (5.1K tonnes), France (4.5K tonnes), the Netherlands (4.3K tonnes), the U.S. (4.1K tonnes), Ecuador (4K tonnes), Belgium (3.4K tonnes), and Russia (3.3K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, China, Hong Kong SAR (+43.8%), Belgium (+14.6%), the U.S. (+14.3%), Portugal (+11.1%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+7.6%), the Netherlands (+2.1%), and France (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2007-2016. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-1.0%), and Ecuador (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ecuador (2%) increased significantly, the share of Portugal (-2.4%), China, Hong Kong SAR (-4.4%), and China (-13.0%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($617M) remains the largest waterproof footwear supplier in the world, making up 45% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($113M), with the share of 8% of global exports. It was followed by France, with the share of 4%.

In China, waterproof footwear exports stood at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Italy (+1.9% per year) and France (+2.8% per year).

Waterproof Footwear Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for waterproof footwear amounted to $6,341 per tonne, declining by -5.0% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%.The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when export increased by 39% from the previous year level. In that year, average waterproof footwear export price reached its maximum level of $7,155 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average waterproof footwear export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was France ($13 per kg), while Russia ($2,575 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of waterproof footwear export prices was attained by China (+5.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
