In 2019, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of footwear, when their volume decreased by -X% to X pairs. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X pairs in 2018, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, footwear exports plummeted to $X in 2019. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2019; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X pairs) was the main destination for footwear exports from Portugal, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, footwear exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X pairs), fivefold. The UK (X pairs) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-X% per year) and the UK (-X% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for footwear exported from Portugal worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the U.S., Japan, Italy, Australia and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further X recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2018, the average footwear export price amounted to $X per pair, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per pair in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2018, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per pair), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2019, approx. X pairs of footwear were imported into Portugal; surging by X% on 2018. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X pairs in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, footwear imports shrank to $X in 2019. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2019; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
