Which Country Exports the Most Pesticides in the World?

Global pesticide exports stood at 5.4M tonnes in 2016, rising by 8% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, pesticide exports increased by +72.4% against its level of 2009. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when exports increased by 14% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global pesticide exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pesticide exports totaled $31B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a prominent growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, pesticide exports decreased by -11.7% against its level of 2014. Global pesticide export peaked of $35B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Pesticide Exports By Country

China (1.4M tonnes) was the main exporting country with an export of about 1.4M tonnes, which finished at 26% of total exports. The U.S. (485K tonnes) held a 9% share (based on tonnes) of global pesticide exports, which put it in second place, following Germany (9%), France (8%), Belgium (7%), and India (7%). The UK (166K tonnes), Spain (149K tonnes), Malaysia (129K tonnes), Israel (125K tonnes), the Netherlands (111K tonnes), and Argentina (110K tonnes) held the minor share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, India (+14.1%), France (+5.8%), Spain (+5.8%), Belgium (+5.8%), Malaysia (+5.6%), Germany (+4.5%), the U.S. (+4.2%), the Netherlands (+1.6%), and Israel (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +14.1% from 2007-2016. Argentina, and the UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The U.S. (-2.8%), Belgium (-2.8%), Germany (-2.9%), France (-3.1%), India (-4.6%), and China (-17.0%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($4B), China ($3.7B) and the U.S. ($3.4B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together comprising 36% of global exports. These countries were followed by France, India, Belgium, the UK, Spain, Israel, the Netherlands, Argentina and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 39%.

India (+12.6% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of pesticide exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pesticide Export Prices By Country

The average pesticide export price stood at $5,643 per tonne in 2016, lowering by -10.5% against the previous year. In general, pesticide export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export price increased by 24% y-o-y. In that year, average pesticide export price attained its maximum level of $7,330 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average pesticide export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($8,511 per tonne), while Malaysia ($2,171 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of pesticide export prices was attained by Israel (+4.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
