Which Country Exports the Most Jerseys, Pullovers and Cardigans in the World?

In 2016, the amount of jersey exported worldwide totaled 1.6M tonnes, remaining constant against the previous year level. In general, jersey exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009, an increase of 30% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global jersey exports reached its maximum volume of 2.1M tonnes in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, jersey exports amounted to $45B in 2016. In general, jersey exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global jersey exports attained its maximum level of $56B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Jersey Exports By Country

China (522K tonnes) was the main exporter of jersey in the world, finishing at 522K tonnes, which was approx. 34% of total exports in 2016. China, Hong Kong SAR (100K tonnes) ranks second globally in jersey exports with a 6% share, following Turkey (5%), Honduras (5%), and Viet Nam (5%). Spain (56K tonnes), Germany (55K tonnes), Pakistan (49K tonnes), Indonesia (49K tonnes), the UK (46K tonnes), Cambodia (46K tonnes), and Italy (34K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, Viet Nam (+13.3%), the UK (+10.9%), Honduras (+9.5%), Indonesia (+5.0%), Turkey (+4.8%), Spain (+4.2%), Italy (+4.1%), Germany (+2.2%), and Pakistan (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Viet Nam emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2007-2016. By contrast, Cambodia (-1.7%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR increased by 6% percentage points, while the UK (-1.8%), Turkey (-1.9%), China (-2.1%), Honduras (-3.0%), and Viet Nam (-3.1%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($18B) remains the largest jersey supplier in the world, making up 39% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China, Hong Kong SAR ($3.6B), with the share of 8% of global exports. It was followed by Viet Nam, with the share of 6%.

In China, jersey exports stood at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: China, Hong Kong SAR (-6.6% per year) and Viet Nam (+13.6% per year).

Jersey Export Prices By Country

The average jersey export price stood at $29 per kg in 2016, waning by -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, jersey export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when it surged by 22% from the previous year level. Global jersey export peaked of $33 per kg in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($75 per kg), while Pakistan ($3,812 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of jersey export prices was attained by Spain (+3.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
