Which Country Exports the Most Articles Of Stationery in the World?

Global stationery exports amounted to 1.4M tonnes in 2016, remaining constant against the previous year figure. Overall, stationery exports continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 4% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global stationery exports attained its maximum volume of 1.7M tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, stationery exports totaled $4.1B in 2016. In general, stationery exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, global stationery exports reached its maximum level of $4.6B. From 2012 to 2016, growth of global stationery exports failed to regain its strength.

Stationery Exports By Country

China (565K tonnes) was the main exporter of stationery in the world, accounting for 565K tonnes, which was approx. 40% of total exports in 2016. India (96K tonnes) ranks second globally in stationery exports with a 7% share, following Indonesia (6%). The following exporters - Mexico (61K tonnes), Germany (60K tonnes), the U.S. (51K tonnes), Malaysia (40K tonnes), France (33K tonnes), Czech Republic (31K tonnes), Italy (28K tonnes), the Netherlands (24K tonnes), and Viet Nam (24K tonnes) together made up 25% of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, India (+9.4%), and Viet Nam (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2007-2016. Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the U.S. (-1.3%), Malaysia (-2.0%), Italy (-3.7%), France (-4.1%), Germany (-5.1%), and Mexico (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Mexico, China, and Germany increased by 3%, 3%, and 2% percentage points, while India (-3.8%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.5B) remains the largest stationery supplier in the world, making up 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($258M), with the share of 6% of global exports. It was followed by the U.S., with the share of 5%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of stationery exports in China stood at +6.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-4.2% per year) and the U.S. (-0.9% per year).

Stationery Export Prices By Country

The average stationery export price stood at $2,889 per tonne in 2016, lowering by -3.0% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export price increased by 13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average stationery export price attained its maximum level of $3,004 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($6,085 per tonne), while Indonesia ($1,310 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of stationery export prices was attained by China (+7.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
