Global onion and shallot consumption amounted to 4,226 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global onion and shallot consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. In that year, the global onion and shallot consumption attained its maximum volume of 4,310 thousand tonnes. From 2012 to 2015, the total onion and shallot consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Green Onion And Shallots Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were China (967 thousand tonnes), Japan (545 thousand tonnes), the Republic of Korea (523 thousand tonnes), together comprising 49% of total consumption. They were followed by Tunisia with a 7% of global consumption share and Nigeria with a 6% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of onion and shallot consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+2.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of onion and shallot (green) per capita consumption was registered in Tunisia (26.75 kg/year), followed by the Republic of Korea (10.39 kg/year), Japan (4.30 kg/year), Nigeria (1.27 kg/year) and China (0.69 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of onion and shallot (green) was estimated at 2.75 kg/year in 2015.

In Tunisia, per capita onion and shallot (green) consumption has grown noticably (+5.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Tunisia per capita consumption reached 26.75 kg/year as compared with 17.48 kg/year in 2007.
