Which Country Consumes the Most Dry Peas in the World?

Global dry peas consumption amounted to 11,144 thousand tonnes in 2015, dropping by -0.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global dry peas consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +8% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global dry peas consumption attained its maximum volume of 11,249 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total dry peas consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Dry Peas Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were India (2,721 thousand tonnes), China (2,273 thousand tonnes), the United States (941 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 51% of total consumption. They were followed by Canada with a 7% of global consumption share and Russia with a 7% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of dry peas consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+6.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The highest levels of peas (dry) per capita consumption was registered in Canada (22.07 kg/year), followed by Russia (5.37 kg/year), the United States (2.92 kg/year), India (2.08 kg/year) and China (1.62 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of peas (dry) was estimated at 0.97 kg/year in 2015.

In China, per capita peas (dry) consumption has grown noticably (+6.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 22.07 kg/year as compared with 0.99 kg/year in 2007.
