Which Country Consumes the Most Silk-Worm Cocoons in the World?

Global silk-worm cocoons consumption amounted to 554 thousand tonnes in 2015, lowering by -4.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global silk-worm cocoons consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +8% from the previous year level. In that year, the global silk-worm cocoons consumption attained its maximum volume of 634 thousand tonnes. From 2009 to 2015, the total silk-worm cocoons consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Silk-Worm Cocoons Consumption

With nearly 398 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading silk-worm cocoons consuming country, accounting for 66% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (151 thousand tonnes) and Uzbekistan (25 thousand tonnes), with a share of 25% and 4%, respectively. Moreover, silk-worm cocoons consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by India threefold. They were followed by Iran with a 2% of global consumption share and Slovenia with a 1% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of silk-worm cocoons consumption in China stood at +1.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+1.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+4.4% per year).

The highest levels of silk-worm cocoons (reelable) per capita consumption was registered in Uzbekistan (0.85 kg/year), followed by China (0.28 kg/year), Iran (0.15 kg/year), India (0.12 kg/year) and Slovenia (0.00 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of silk-worm cocoons (reelable) was estimated at 0.06 kg/year in 2015.

In Iran, per capita silk-worm cocoons (reelable) consumption has grown noticably (+3.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Iran per capita consumption reached 0.85 kg/year as compared with 0.12 kg/year in 2007.
