Which Country Eats the Most Green Beans in the World?

Global green bean consumption amounted to 22,457 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global green bean consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +5% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global green bean consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Green Beans Consumption

With nearly 17,325 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading green bean consuming country, making up 78% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Indonesia (853 thousand tonnes) and Turkey (651 thousand tonnes), with a share of 4% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, green bean consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Indonesia more than tenfold. They were followed by India with a 3% of global consumption share and Thailand with a 1% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of green bean consumption in China stood at +3.2%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Indonesia (-0.2% per year) and Turkey (+2.9% per year).

Per capita bean (green) in China was estimated at 12.31 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.93 kg/year. China was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of bean (green), followed by Turkey (8.28 kg/year), Thailand (4.49 kg/year), Indonesia (3.31 kg/year) and India (0.49 kg/year).

In China, per capita bean (green) consumption has grown noticably (+2.7% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 12.31 kg/year as compared with 9.96 kg/year in 2007.
