U.S. Speed Changer Exports
In October 2022, after two months of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of speed changers, industrial high-speed drives and gear, when their volume decreased by -3% to 8.2K tons. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the period from January 2022 to October 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when exports increased by 32% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 8.6K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to October 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, speed changer exports fell to $327M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% over the period from January 2022 to October 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 17% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 347K tons in September 2022, and then contracted in the following month.
Exports by Country
Mexico (3K tons) was the main destination for speed changer exports from the United States, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, speed changer exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (942 tons), threefold. China (934 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to October 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Mexico was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (+15.4% per month) and China (+7.8% per month).
In value terms, the largest markets for speed changer exported from the United States were Canada ($101M), Mexico ($51M) and China ($27M), together comprising 55% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Brazil, Australia, Chile, Belgium and India, which together accounted for a further 19%.
Among the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +12.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements (6.5K tons) was the largest type of speed changer exported from the United States, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements exceeded the volume of the second product type, gearboxes and speed changers (1.7K tons), fourfold.
From January 2022 to October 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements totaled +3.7%.
In value terms, the most traded types of speed changers, industrial high-speed drives and gear in the United States were gearboxes and speed changers ($180M) and toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements ($147M).
Gearboxes and speed changers, with a CAGR of +3.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the speed changer price stood at $40.1 per kg in October 2022 (FOB, US), waning by -3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $41.3 per kg in September 2022, and then shrank slightly in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($135 per kg), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($17.0 per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to October 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
