In February 2023, the amount of pimenta pepper imported into the United States contracted to 12K tons, falling by -10.5% against January 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when imports increased by 41% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 20K tons. From November 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports shrank to $36M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 41% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $47M. From November 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
Mexico (4.6K tons), China (2.5K tons) and India (1.7K tons) were the main suppliers of pimenta pepper imports to the United States, together comprising 70% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Peru, Colombia and Guatemala, which together accounted for a further 26%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Guatemala (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($8.2M), China ($7M) and India ($6.9M) constituted the largest pimenta pepper suppliers to the United States, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Spain, Peru, Guatemala and Colombia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
Guatemala, with a CAGR of +11.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the pimenta pepper price stood at $2,904 per ton (CIF, US), with an increase of 5.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 11% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,958 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($4,250 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($1,208 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
