U.S. Lithium Carbonate Import Price per Ton in September 2022
In September 2022, the lithium carbonate price per ton stood at $16.3K (CIF, US), surging by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 an increase of 36% against the previous month. The import price peaked in September 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Chile ($17.7K per ton), while the price for Argentina ($9.3K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Lithium Carbonate Imports
In September 2022, after two months of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of lithium carbonates, when their volume decreased by -84.3% to 290 tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 141% month-to-month.
In value terms, lithium carbonate imports reduced notably to $4.7M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 210% m-o-m.
U.S. Lithium Carbonate Imports by Country
In September 2022, Chile (237 tons) constituted the largest lithium carbonate supplier to the United States, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium carbonate imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (41 tons), sixfold.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Chile totaled -14.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (-29.4% per month) and the UK (+39.0% per month).
In value terms, Chile ($4.2M) constituted the largest supplier of lithium carbonate to the United States, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($379K), with an 8% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Chile stood at -3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (-23.9% per month) and the UK (+39.0% per month).
